Orlando Day 2 – Sunday Cross-Cultural Experiences

Day two in Orlando unfolded with an incredible cross-cultural experience. Today, we had the opportunity to attend a local church service, one that introduced us to the vibrant and spirited community of East African descent here in Florida. And let me tell you, it was unlike any church service I’ve ever attended.

The service lasted three hours, but not once did it feel long. There was something so captivating about how the congregation worshipped—it was through song and dance, and we were all invited to join in. Dancing and singing with everyone, feeling that unity and joy was an unforgettable experience. It’s hard to put into words the energy in the room, but it was powerful and deeply moving.

The sermon left a profound impact on me. It centered around building a firm foundation in Christ for ourselves and those around us. The message was clear and resonant, especially when it touched on the role of our generation. It called us to be a generation of change, pioneers walking by faith with a clear vision of God’s righteousness and love. It was a call to action, a reminder of the responsibility we carry to shape the future in faith and with purpose.

Reflecting on today, the sermon’s message intertwines beautifully with our trip’s mission. “Becoming People of Welcome” isn’t just about the welcome we extend to others; it’s also about how we build and nurture our foundations to support those around us more effectively. It’s a reminder that change starts within, with how we see God and how we choose to walk by faith.

In the afternoon, we hosted a picnic for some of the refugee families we would be helping throughout the week. I played a role in distributing food while other members of our group engaged in activities like face painting and leading fun games.

Today was a reminder of the power of community and worship and the impact of a strong, faith-filled foundation. As we move forward with our mission here, I feel even more motivated to embrace this call to be pioneers of change, inspired by the faith and joy we shared today.

P.S. We also got to go down to a beach near Cape Canaveral and watch a SpaceX Rocket launch, which I have always wanted to see!
