Day four of our trip to Orlando was a day filled with profound moments of service, courage, and reflection. Our afternoon was dedicated to volunteering at a small local food bank, where we had the privilege of distributing food to members of the community in need.
I took on the role of a greeter, welcoming each person with a warm smile. Later, I found myself unexpectedly standing in front of an audience, tasked with sharing a testimonial. Despite feeling a bit out of my comfort zone, especially without a microphone, I summoned the courage to speak, spurred on by the encouraging presence of my mentor. Though nervous, a few individuals took the time to express their gratitude afterward, which meant the world to me.

Following the testimonial, the host presented a demonstration known as the chemical cross. In this powerful visual, a cross is submerged into a clear bucket of red chemicals, symbolizing our sins, which are then neutralized, turning the water clear. It was a poignant reminder of the transformative power of Christ’s forgiveness and redemption.
Throughout the day, as we interacted with the community and witnessed their pressing needs, it became increasingly apparent just how vital grassroots support is in addressing the challenges faced by these neighborhoods. The experience served as a stark reminder of the importance of compassion, empathy, and tangible action in making a difference in the lives of others.
That evening, I was scheduled to drive another client to their ESL class. However, plans changed unexpectedly when they decided not to attend the class. This situation demanded the full extent of my Spanish language skills, coupled with the aid of Google Translate. It was a poignant reminder of the importance of flexibility and adaptability on mission trips like ours. Sometimes plans don’t work out and being open to adjustments while maintaining a positive attitude is crucial.
Day four was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of service and solidarity. As we continue our journey, may we carry with us the lessons learned and the moments shared, inspired to be beacons of hope and agents of change in our communities and beyond.
